Negative emotions have a powerful influence on all of our cognitive and intellectual functions. Attention, perception, working memory, judgment and reasoning are all affected by negative emotions. Several scientific facts support this phenomenon and can attest to the fact that negative emotions are responsible for many difficulties associated to the learning process. It is not necessary for the emotions that are experienced by the learner to be intense and acute. They can be more diffused and subtile. It is true that having a fit of anger or sadness can affect us tremendously. But with certain emotional states, which can last hours and even days, our well being and cognitive functions can be seriously undermined. Hence, if students are not given a minimum amount of emotional help to cope with their academic exams, negative emotional traces can register in their brain and ultimately affect their intellectual, relational and technical capacities. This is why we think that emotional pedagogy is equally important and it is essential for all teachers and trainers to stimulate positive background emotions with respect to the subjects taught as well as the simple fact of learning.
